Resolutions-ish

Here's the thing about this time of year: people feel a number of things that I don't feel because of the fact that my Birthday is January 9th. Most of them land somewhere in the area of these two spheres:

1. Christmas is over and that's sad.
2. It's a new calendar year, so I feel the need to change things about myself, my home, life, etc.

Here is why neither of those things really apply to someone who has a birthday this time of year:

1. Christmas is over, so whatever I didn't get then, I may potentially receive in a few weeks.
2. My Birthday is coming so I should eat cake, take a day off of work and spend money.

Or, if you are really into astrology, you can look at it this way:

1. I am a Capricorn, so I don't get sad.
2. Let's boss everyone else into something and never change anything about ourselves.

So then, I don't really do resolutions, the thought of being re-organized, newly disciplined or "new" about anything else doesn't really work for me. I like to think that I live in a logical manner and am already doing a pretty good job with most things (see #2 above).

But I do think that the older we all get, the less time we spend doing the things that we like to do. I believe that the main reason we do less of the things we like as we age is because we don't bother trying to find out what else we like. So, as I stare down my 28th Birthday next week, I'm thinking that I need to start experiencing more stuff. The more I experience, the more I will like (in theory). Call this my third-life epiphany (quarter-life, maybe?).

The items below are not a checklist that I intend to go down. This is about bringing some interest, variety, culture and exploration into my life. I definitely believe that when you share your aims or goals, people hold you accountable to them. On that note, here are some of the things that I am going to make an effort to do moving forward in my life:

1. Try 3 new recipes a month.
2. Eat out with my newly founded dinner-club once a month
3. See more shows
4. Take more day trips
5. Create some new healthy habits that are enjoyable (like how I picked up running last year)
6. Do a pinterest project from my "I will do this someday" board once a month
7. Write down my thoughts
8. Stop taking things so personally
9. Allow second chances for those previously written off (activities, food, and people alike)
10. Incorporate more childish fun (sledding, for example).

What do you guys think? How do you feel about resolutions, what about "experiences"? What else should I try to do during the next phase of my adult life?

  1. You should definately do some more writing. I don't think this just because I am your Mom, but you are seriously entertaining, upbeat and yes, bossy. However, there are many people in life who need to be bossed and entertained. I fall into the second category - don't get any ideas! Write on!
